"CONNECTING WOMEN - ENRICHING COMMUNITY"

IMG_4641.jpeg

The Women's Club of Chatham, Massachusetts is a non-profit organization that endeavors to enrich the educational and civic life of its members and the community. Consistent with this goal the club offers a wide range of volunteer activities through its outreach and community investment programs in support of this mission. In addition to these programs the club offers cultural and educational experiences through its special interest groups and monthly programs.

Regularly scheduled meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at noon at the Chatham Community Center from September through May.

Incorporated in 1915, The Women's Club of Chatham offers memberships to women of Chatham, Harwich and other surrounding towns.

The club was founded in 1915 when Chatham was a small fishing town with1667 residents.  Forty-five women met at someone’s house. They were led by four women, who had to be young, because they were still alive and honored guests at the club’s fiftieth birthday celebration in 1965.  Over the years the club has met at members’ houses, the Wayside Inn, the Board of Trade building (where Impudent Oyster is now), the Methodist church, the First Congregational Church, and the Community Center.

In 1927 the club started a scholarship fund and the first scholarship

was awarded in 1928.

Our holiday toy donations date back to at least 1928.

In the 1940s the club began assembling Christmas gifts and packing

bags and boxes for veteran’s hospitals.

In 1948 the club used the sale of war bonds to purchase a Scout car from

White Motor Company in Detroit to donate to the U.S. Army.

A presentation plaque was attached to the car.

In 1991 the club renamed its spring luncheon the Friendship Luncheon and presented the first Friendship Cup to an unsung hero “to honor a club member who exemplifies the qualities of innate kindness and thoughtfulness…an unassuming person who is always there to help, to encourage, to smile and to be a friend.”

The club remained active during the COVID-19 pandemic with

the help of zoom, our meetings and programs continued.

We look forward to resuming our normal meeting schedule in September of 2021.
